We enjoyed a long and pleasant autumn, so when winter arrived last week we were a bit surprised. (Did I really think we were going to coast through winter with the temperature not dropping below 40 degrees?)
When it gets this cold we find ourselves longing to curl up around the fireplace with a cup of coffee (or hot chocolate for the underage crowd). But, the first thing we do is check on the cattle. When it is brutally cold, we increase the amount of food we provide each day and we make sure they have access to fresh water. As long as they have plenty of food and water, cattle can withstand cold temperatures quite well.

Same for the calves, they are getting more hay and silage these days.

Same for the horses, plenty of hay.

Same for me. 'Tis the season, after all.
